REVIEW: Be Your Own Pet (Self-Titled Album)

April 15, 2008

When someone says “Nashville, Tennessee”, images of country legends come to mind. Surprisingly enough, future legends of a different kind hail from the city too. A female-fronted punk band called Be Your Own Pet takes a left turn at the origin of Nashville’s musical roots. And it makes me a very happy listener. Since female-fronted punk bands are far and few between, I was happy to come across what I’m going to refer to as an “uber band”.

Frontwoman Jemina Pearl Abegg’s voice has been compared to that of Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. In the rock world, that’s an awesome compliment. But BYOP goes beyond a likeness to another kick-ass band. Their style is completely their own as they smash and crash their way through this 15-track debut album. And what a debut! Released last year, every song on this album is chock full of pissed-off, quality angst while having fun at the same time.

With wicked tunes like “Fill My Pill”, “Bicycle, Bicycle, You Are My Bicycle”, “Adventure”, “Wildcat!” and, like, every other song on this album, this CD is a must-listen for any fan of angry chicks who can do punk music without trying that hard. With this band, it’s effortless and effective.
