Name of Film: Wristcutters: A Love Story

Rating: 6 suicides out of 10
First of all, let me just say that I would never have thought to put this film into the “comedy” genre at all. It deals with the very serious topic of suicide and I just didn’t find myself laughing at all throughout this movie… except for when I saw Will Arnett as “The Messiah” (of all things) …for about 3 minutes in total.
Not to say I didn’t like this film. My favorite parts were the very beginning and the very end. I loved that the main character Zia (Patrick Fugit) cleaned his room before he “off”ed himself. I thought that was a clever detail. Besides that, I have to say that Fugit is very nice-looking… even with slices wrists.
There were a few parts in this film that dragged a bit and I just kept thinking “I really want to like this movie a lot because the idea is so unusual.” but, unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way. Maybe I just didn’t “get it”, I don’t know.
The quirky character of Mikal (Shannyn Sossamon) was definitely a highlight of this film. I really enjoy Sossamon’s acting and she was a bright spot in the dismal, colorless world that Wristcutters takes place in.
Maybe that’s why I just couldn’t bring myself to give it a higher rating. I like color. I need color. (On that topic, maybe that’s why I loved Across The Universe so much- because it was packed with color.)
But the end of this movie, I think, was really nice. I’ve never been a fan of movies that don’t have happy endings. I know that’s cliché but I can’t help it. I like a nice happy ending that ties everything together- and this movie had that.
P.S. Remind me never to kill myself. I just couldn’t survive in such a bland place.
